Marfa movies earn
film awards, nominations
MARFA, HOLLYWOOD, Ca. – Move over, Giant. Three movies with Marfa connections released this year are creating a media buzz as loud as a hornet’s nest.
The adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s dark thriller No Country for Old Men was directed by Joel Coen and Ethan Coen and filmed in Marfa over the summer of 2006. Also filmed here that summer was There Will Be Blood, a Daniel Day-Lewis vehicle directed by P.T. Anderson.
Each of these films is racking up awards and nominations from a variety of sources.
Also winning critical nods is Body of War, a documentary on an Iraq war veteran that was co-produced by Marfa resident Karen Bernstein.
“Body of War was just awarded the National Board of Review’s Documentary Film award, which bodes well for an Academy Award nomination – or so the film critics tell us,” Bernstein reports. “Last year’s National Board of Review’s pick was Inconvenient Truth, and we all remember what happened with that film. I would be thrilled if the film was nominated by the Academy.”
