Travel Tips

When driving through West Texas, there is one rule of thumb: be prepared. Weather extremes, long distances and sparse populations can lead to trouble for travelers.

A few good ideas:

  • Have extra water available.
  • Be sure your spare tire is in good repair.
  • Have a small tool kit and first aid kit.
  • Don’t let your gas tank get too low - there can be long distances between gas stations.
  • A cell phone is a good idea, however be aware that service can be spotty.
  • When driving at night, keep alert for deer, javelina and jackrabbits crossing the road.

For safety while walking, hiking or extended exposure to the elements:

  • Have a wide-brim hat for protection against West Texas sun.
  • Keep water, sunscreen and lip balm handy.
  • Be aware of your surroundings - poisonous snakes, mountain lions and other dangerous creatures are common in this area.
  • Make sure you have plenty of any prescription medications you need.
  • Do not cross into private property without permission.
  • Always let someone know where you are going and when you plan to return.
