Marfa is known for its clear skies and temperate weather that is unique to the area of Far West Texas. The town is located on a plateau at over 5,000 feet in elevation in the northern part of the Chihuahuan Desert, creating a dry and generally mild climate that predominates much of the year.
The winters are chilly but relatively short. Temperatures can drop below freezing from October to April, and some occasional light snow can fall in the winter months. The spring can be the driest months with March and April being notorious for high winds and West Texas dust storms.
The early months of summer, May and June, are the hottest with daytime temperatures often in the 90’s and occasionally reaching the low 100’s. However, the nights are cool and breezy, with lows in the 60’s.
The rainy season starts in July and continues through October when heavy afternoon thunderstorms can drop inches of rain in a short time, turning dry arroyos into rushing streams.
Fall is generally pleasant with daytime temperatures in the 60’s and 70’s. Nights tend to cool down to the 40’s and 50’s, and remain above freezing until November.
